Philoctetes, a wounded hero, who has been abandoned on the island of Lemnos and forgotten about by Odysseus and his army, possesses a powerful weapon - an invincible bow. Without this weapon, the Trojan War cannot be won. Odysseus and a young companion, Neoptoleumus, return to Lemnos to persuade Philoctetes to give them his bow either by choice or force.
Seamus Heaney's fast-paced play, based on Sophocles' Philoctetes, explores the conflict between personal integrity and political expediency.
