RADA graduate and former Director of the National Theatre, Rufus Norris has been knighted in this year's Royal birthday honours list.

Rufus was Director of the National theatre for 10 years, during which he oversaw more than 170 productions including The Lehman Trilogy, Small Island, Follies, Grenfell: in the words of survivors, Barber Shop Chronicles, Angels in America, Nine Night, Dear England, Till The Stars Come Down and the forthcoming revival of Nye.

Earlier this year Rufus was recognised at the Olivier Awards with a Special Award acknowledging his contribution to British theatre.

At a RADA event this summer, Rufus said: 'RADA, with its enduring excellence, commitment to craft, and its people, has shaped my creative and leadership journey. It is essential to the future of the art form, but also as a crucible for inclusive community, creative courage, and innovation.'

In a statement about receiving the honour, he said: 'I’m very honoured to receive this recognition. It has been a privilege to work at the National Theatre and to play a part in supporting the extraordinary talent and creativity that defines the UK’s cultural sector. This award is a reflection of the dedication and passion of so many colleagues, artists, and collaborators I’ve had the joy of working with over the years.'
