Niamh Dowling steps down as Principal of RADA
Niamh Dowling has retired as Principal of Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), to focus on her recovery following a period of illness.
Niamh has made a significant contribution to the academic and cultural life of RADA during her tenure. She introduced postgraduate programmes in Playwriting, Stage Management, Performance Lighting Design and Theatre Costume, and reviewed the undergraduate curriculum. She also expanded the Academy’s international engagement, piloting short course provision overseas. In October 2024, she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London for her contribution to arts and education.
Reflecting on her time at RADA, Niamh said: “It has been a privilege to serve RADA, working alongside such committed and creative colleagues and students. I am deeply grateful for the many messages of care, kindness and support I have received from across the performance community.”
Marcus Ryder, Chair of RADA Council, said: “We are indebted to Niamh for her leadership, skill and generosity. She has left a lasting mark on our Academy and community through her commitment to liberatory models of performance, design and technical training.
RADA Council, staff and students join in thanking Niamh warmly for her leadership of the Academy, wishing her the very best for her recovery.”
Niamh joined RADA in June 2022 following a distinguished career in theatre and performance education. She has worked extensively as a movement director, teacher and collaborator across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Central Asia, including a long partnership with the British Council. Her practice brings together movement, Alexander Technique and systemic approaches to leadership.
Helen Slater continues to serve as Interim Principal, working closely with the Academy’s leadership and Council to ensure continuity and stability.
