RADA Buddy scheme with Skye Hallam
We caught up with BA (Hons) acting graduate Skye Hallam about her experience of RADA's Buddy scheme.
What was your experience with your third year professional buddy?
I was given three buddies, two who were particularly helpful and supportive. I felt that they were really well matched to me, actors who I could relate to, doing work that I was aspiring to do myself one day! One of my buddies was in a show at the National Theatre, London at the time and took me backstage and I got to see her dressing room and eat in the canteen, it was exciting! She also brought the NT Casting department to one of my final third year shows and that was so generous of her.
How did the buddy scheme help you?
It helped me to feel part of an industry, rather than feeling like a really small fish in a big pond. It helped me to feel supported, looked out for and that there was someone permanently on my side who I could be open and honest with and not worry about what they would think of me. The stakes were low, they just wanted to help and be a cheer leader and that was so valuable at such a crucial time.
Why did you want to become an industry buddy?
I wanted to help someone feel that support I felt and I love being connected to RADA in any way I can. I teach at RADA on a freelance basis and anything that can keep me connected with current students and the world of RADA is a blessing that I really value. I graduated at 21 and at only 31 now, I also feel that I can still really relate with what these actors have gone through and as a working actor, see the benefit of being able to share what's worked for me, with them!
Why do you feel being an industry buddy is important for RADA graduates to do?
It's important for us to help guide, listen to and be there for new actors. The industry can feel daunting to enter into. Nothing can prepare you for being out in the world as a newly trained actor. Buddies fill a very specific gap in a newly graduated actor's life. We're designated to talk about how the actor is feeling about their work. how they're getting on with their agent, how auditions are going... they may not want to talk to their fellow graduates about this or their family and friends back home, or feel that they can. We are here for whatever they need and this is so important because this industry is built on connections. If we can help them network and book their next job, or even their first job, great! If we can be a friendly shoulder to lean on... great. It's a rare position to be in, to be able to offer them support when we know exactly how they're feeling.
