Richard is a theatre director and teacher. He originally trained as an actor at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art; subsequently, he read English at the University of Cambridge, and he received his PhD from The Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham.

As an actor, he has performed on various stages in the UK and Europe, appearing in new writing, classical plays, and American drama; in addition, he has worked on film, and in audio dramas as a voice artist. Richard has directed numerous productions, including, among others, the works of Harold Pinter, Edward Albee, David Hare, Chekhov, Sophocles, and Shakespeare. He has taught and directed at several other drama schools.

With a passion for intercultural theatre, Richard has spent time living and working in Japan. He observed Ninagawa Yukio in rehearsals for his production of Troilus and Cressida; more recently, he helped acclaimed translator Matsuoka Kazuko with her translation of All’s Well That Ends Well which was performed in Saitama.
