PHAEDRA'S LOVE

by Sarah Kane (1996)
Directed by Iqbal Khan
Designed by Florence de Maré

Phaedra’s Love is Sarah Kane’s brutal and sinisterly comic vision of an ancient tale. The crown prince Hippolytus is bored, lethally bored. His stepmother, Phaedra, is distracted... Her husband left long ago after their marriage night to fight the wars and a clawing longing breeds within her... The consequences of this ‘love’ may burn the royal house and the streets without.

Most of her funds go to cover the exorbitant demands of her alcoholic Russian husband - Sergey Esenin, the insanely jealous, non-English speaking poet. A dinner party must be organised in order to charm the money out of an Italian diplomat Isadora met last night. Lobsters! Champagne? Sell the furniture!

LOVE FOR LOVE

by William Congreve (1695)
Directed by Annie Tyson
Designed by Amelia Jane Hankin

‘Now my mind is set upon a man, I will have a man some way or other…’. So determines Miss Prue, up from the country and a valuable commodity in the marriage market. However, she has a mind of her own as do all the women in Congreve’s racy, dark comedy: Mrs Foresight, married to a superstitious old hypochondriac, Mrs Frail, her sister, somewhat past her shelf-life and desperate for a husband and not least Angelica, ‘difficult’ and independent, who is pursued by the libertine, Valentine. He has ruined himself financially among the women of the town, is threatened with disinheritance by his father, pursued by creditors and has a bastard child to support. Does he stand any chance, or indeed deserve, to get the girl?

THE NEW ELECTRIC BALLROOM

by Enda Walsh (2005)

In a small fishing village on the west coast of Ireland, two ageing sisters re-enact an evening at the New Electric Ballroom that changed their lives forever. Isolated from the outside world, opening their hearts might be their only hope of salvation. Enda Walsh’s dark fable of devastating romance confirms his place as one of the most dazzling wordsmiths of contemporary theatre.

LOVE AND MONEY

by Dennis Kelly (2006)
Directed by Paris Erotokritou

Love and Money focuses on a young married couple whose lives are ruined because of financial pressures and a huge debt incurred by the wife’s incurable shopping addiction. In a debt-ridden world where paradoxically consumerism often substitutes for human communication Love and Money reflects on the impact of contemporary financial disasters on ordinary people.

M. BUTTERFLY

by David Henry Hwang (1998)
Directed by Whitney Mosery

‘A former French diplomat and a Chinese opera singer have been sentenced to six years in jail for spying for China after a two day trial that traced a story of clandestine love and mistaken sexual identity…’ The New York Times, May 11, 1986

Based on this incredible true story, David Henry Hwang’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play weaves captivating theatricality with startling emotional honesty to explode our preconceptions of love and loyalty. Love may be an illusion, but it is an illusion many would die to believe in.
