Daniel Keene is a writer from Australia, and so we would like to make the following Acknowledgement of Country:
Along with Reconciliation Australia, RADA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.
Wild Cherries makes its UK premiere with this production at RADA. The play, written by award-winning writer Daniel Keene, follows seven people suffering on the margins of society and their uncertain bid for freedom. Set on a cherry orchard, Keene tells the broken stories of forgotten labourers trapped in modern slavery:
Elena remains hopeful that she can find joy in the small freedoms offered by their community while Cezar, cemented in his routine, wonders if freedom is even worth thinking about at all.
Dorin and Laura retain their humanity by clinging onto the memories of family and Anton wonders whether the decisions he makes will ensure his future.
Sonia has no sense of home anymore and Emil doesn’t know where he is coming from so why should he care where he’s going next?
