RADA Youth Company: Technical Theatre
About the RADA Youth Company: Technical Theatre
For those with an interest in stage management and technical theatre, the Youth Company offers a solid training in a variety of areas of behind the scenes theatrecraft. Working together with the Youth Company: Acting, the Youth Company: Technical Theatre will give young people the opportunity to try out elements of technical theatre culminating in productions on Friday 4 August and Saturday 5 August. The productions are on Friday 3 August at 7.00pm and Saturday 4 August at 2.00pm and 7.00pm.
What are the dates of the course?
Saturday 5 May – Saturday 21 July (Every Saturday, 10.00am – 5.00pm for 12 Weeks) Monday 23 July – Saturday 4 August (Every day excluding Sundays and including evenings)
How will I be selected?
Up to 12 Company members aged 16 - 24 are selected from a taster workshop that is held at RADA over a weekend in April. You will not need to prepare anything, just come along and get involved in the activity. The Taster workshop will be a chance for you to find out more about the Youth Company: Technical Theatre, learn some of the skills that will be covered during the two week programme and meet the team here at RADA.
What will I learn?
During your time at RADA, you will learn about many aspects of technical theatre including elements of how to design, stage manage and operate a live show. From props to costume, lighting, sound and stage management, you will find out about the different core areas of technical theatre, these include:
- Sound design and operation
- Lighting design and operation
- Stage Management, including cueing and scene changes
- Costume and make-up
- Scenic Art
After experiencing tasters of these subjects, led by RADA staff and graduates, you will then be paired with a current RADA student or graduate to specialise on your chosen area of technical theatre for the August shows.
Will I get to work on a show?
Yes! Working in partnership with the Youth Company: Acting, the course culminates at the end of the Summer term in a public performance in RADA's Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre. Performed by actors from the Youth Company: Acting group, all members of the RADA Youth Company will work together to produce a classic show for a paying audience..
What does it cost?
The cost is £90. This fee can be paid in one instalment or on a daily basis.
Free places are given to Youth Company members from households earning less than £25,000 per year, looked after children and care-leavers. You will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship if you are from a family income of less than £42,000 and in need of financial support.
