Joss Bennathan was an immensely gifted theatre director and drama teacher who founded Present Moment theatre company which prides itself on the centrality of young people to its work. His most recent book, Making Theatre: The Frazzled Drama Teacher’s Guide to Devising, conveys his experience of both creating and organising in schools.
Present Moment’s Theatre Lab programme co-produces classic plays with school students, but as Joss said, I look for a way of telling a story clearly, to bring it to life and make it accessible without dumbing down.
Beyond his education work and the classic Joss’s credits included three shows with the comedy duo Laurence and Gus and the sell-out sensation of the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe - A-Team: The Musical.
Joss was a graduate from our MA in Text and Performance, and had recently revisited us to present a show at one of the first RADA festivals.
I cannot stress enough how much I admired and respected him. He spoke with conviction and believed in the need for theatre which transforms young people’s world view and helps them transcend their own experience.
