After winning a Tony Award for her lead role in The Color Purple on Broadway, RADA graduate Cynthia Erivo picked up a Grammy Award yesterday for her work on the show's cast recording.
The cast of The Color Purple – including Cynthia as one of the principal soloists – won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, beating off competition from Bright Star, Waitress, Kinky Boots and Fiddler On The Roof. The award follows a critically-acclaimed run on Broadway; the show closed on 8 January and will soon emark on a north American tour.
Based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple first played on Broadway in 2005 and came to the Menier Chocolate Factory in London in 2013, where Cynthia first played the role of Celie.
As well as coming away with an award, Cynthia also performed at the Grammy Awards ceremony in LA. Her duet of 'God Only Knows' with John Legend accompanied the In mnemoriam tribute to artists who passed away in the last 12 months.
