RADA was delighted to welcome Director Izumi Ashizawa to work on a mini performance project in physical theatre with our MA Theatre Lab students. The one-hour show was created in two intensive weeks through a series of improvisations on the theme of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck.
Ashizawa explores story-telling through Japanese physical performance techniques including those from Nôh, Kabuki, and Suzuki that require extreme discipline and physical control. She is famed for interdisciplinary collaboration with dancers, actors, composers, musicians, sculptors.
Hauntingly beautiful… Director Izumi Ashizawa … tenderly brings out the heart and soul of all of tales while keeping a sense of flow for the audience.

Andrew Visnevski, Course Leader of the MA Theatre Lab, commented, This was a wonderful opportunity for our students, all of whom bring professional experience to their studies, but had not been immersed in the Japanese discipline of theatre making. The encounter with the incredible work of Ashizawa came at the right point in their training.
