On Wednesday 14 January Berlin cabaret artist Eva Meier gave a concert for RADA staff and students in the Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre, followed by a workshop for the MA Theatre Lab students on the following Sunday.
The MA course regularly invites practitioners who are recognised experts in their field to come and share their skills and experience with the students for workshops, and Eva Meier comes with over 40 years of experience in singing German cabaret and art-songs.
One of the MA students was thrilled about the experience and said that 'I see a clear way to take this forward into our work on Mother Courage.'
Andrew Visnevski, Head of MAs, said, ‘I wanted the students to engage with cabaret and art-song as another tool for actors; it is my belief we ought to give them the widest perspective’. The perfect opportunity to expand the students experience arose with the creation by Jane Streeton, author of Singing on Stage: An Actor's Guide, of the Musical Masters series of masterclasses and concerts for RADA students.
Jane commented that 'Eva's concert and masterclass were an inspiration. We all learned such a lot and it was fantastic to be exposed to this level of expertise in a directly related field.
I have had great feedback from the BA students. I think that events such as this are wonderful in furthering RADA's creative and artistic journey.'
A graduate of the Otto-Falkenberg Drama School in Munich, Eva Meier made her debut at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan with a programme of Brecht songs which jumpstarted her career as a chanson singer. She has a broad repertoire and a vast amount of experience on stage, on screen, and on the radio.
