The Olympics, Moscow 1980. The streets have been cleaned and the working girls shipped out to isolated hostels. Here they share their hopes and dreams while they wait for the Olympic Torch to pass by.

Premiered by Lev Dodin and the Maly Theatre in 1987, Alexander Galin’s angry and poetic drama explores the underbelly of a great international celebration. An

Cymbeline

By William Shakespeare
Directed by Nona Shepphard
Designed by Velin Edrov

Set in the corrupt and incompetent court of England, sophisticated salons of antique Rome and the warm-hearted but secret court-in-exile in Wales,
Cymbeline, with its romance form and fairy tale motifs, is rich in psychological and political detail; it is tragedy, comedy, romance and melodrama by turns and
sweeps to a triumphant last scene with its multiple revelations and satisfying conclusion.

The play’s heroine, Imogen, is a blend of the beautiful princesses of fairy tale and the practical but emotionally naïve cross dressers of Shakespeare’s comedies; but throughout this very complicated and enthralling plot, her goodness, determination, experience of grief, humanity and very real heroism shine through, and make her one of his most successful creations.

penetrator

By Anthony Neilson (1993)
Directed by Matthew Monaghan (RADA MA Theatre Directing student)
Designed by Huan Wang (RADA MA Theatre Directing student)

Tadge returns from the horrors of war to a Britain he no longer recognises or respects. Broken and psychotically unhinged, he seeks revenge. A domestic shocker, Penetrator uncompromisingly tears apart the male psyche with a compulsion by turns hilarious and horrific.

Matthew’s previous directing credits include Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis, his own adaptation of Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber, Measure for Measure and Philip Ridley’s Vincent River.

Huan Wang worked in China on over 40 theatrical productions before he came to study Theatre Directing at RADA. He has won a number of prestigious National Theatre Awards, and was the Visual Design Director for the opening ceremonies of the 29th Beijing Olympics
and the 6th Winter Asian Games.

This production has a professional cast.
