Stage Electrics and Lighting Design

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Programme

At the start of this four term course students will learn basic backstage work, including scenery handling and flying, continuing with all aspects of theatre lighting and sound. The training will provide students with all the skills they need to take on the roles of Sound Operator and Designer, Production Electrician and Lighting Operator, Assistant Lighting Designer and Lighting Designer on the Academy’s public productions.

Students will work with professional directors, designers and lighting designers. The training will be supplemented by visits, guest lectures and demonstrations. In the final term, students’ project work will be exhibited in the ‘Technical Tree’ giving them the opportunity to talk about their work with an invited group of industry contacts.

THE TRAINING INCLUDES:

  • Lighting and sound design on RADA productions
  • Lantern identification and maintenance; rigging; focusing
  • Lighting board operation and programming
  • Lighting design projects
  • Theatre history
  • Sound
  • Technical drawing
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Research – style and period
  • Lectures in practical theory in lighting design
  • Stagecraft
  • Project work on lighting design
  • Opportunities for professional work attachments

This course leads to the award of a postgraduate diploma in Stage Electrics and Lighting Design.
